Phase Field Modelling Software
To achieve the aims in the NEWAM project, a custom software application called CIPHER has been created that is an acronym of ‘CALPHAD Integrated PHase field solvER’. CIPHER is based on phase field modelling (PFM), where the temporal evolution of a phase of matter is determined by the phase field equation.
In CIPHER the bulk energy term is calculated via the CALPHAD method, which enables to determine for a specific alloy. This is vital for the current purpose, which is to simulate solidification microstructures for various alloys. CIPHER is also applicable to modelling a variety of other phenomenon, including precipitation and solid-state transformations.
CIPHER has advanced features: massively parallel adaptive mesh refinement; local truncation error estimates; and adaptive time stepping.
