High performance modified titanium alloys
Although Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) is well suited for many industry components that can be built using WAAM, there are less-common titanium alloys that are specifically designed for high performance applications that require specific superior properties. NEWAM has now turned its attention to these high-performance titanium alloys; such as Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr, which is a high strength alloy utilised in aerospace parts such as landing gear, and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si, a high-temperature application alloy used in jet engines. Much of the consortium's work on Ti64 WAAM can be applied to these alloys; however, due to the varying alloy chemical compositions and the effect this has on the material phase transformations, there is still development required to optimise their microstructures and mechanical properties.
